Our Journey and Purpose

Khuluma, meaning ‘to speak out,’ was founded with the vision of addressing mental health challenges through dialogue and community support. Our name embodies our mission to encourage individuals to voice their experiences and seek help. Established as a Non-Profit social justice enterprise, Khuluma trains unemployed social workers, equipping them with the skills to make a meaningful impact on mental health in their communities.

Our Vision for Mental Health

At Khuluma, we believe that wellbeing begins with understanding. Through a social work lens, people are seen not as isolated individuals, but as members of families, communities and cultures that shape their experiences of the world.

This understanding is reflected in the spirit of Sawubona (“I see you”) – a greeting that conveys recognition, dignity and belonging. To truly see someone is to look beyond a single challenge or moment in time and appreciate the relationships, experiences and circumstances that influence their wellbeing.

Mental wellbeing cannot be separated from the environments in which people live, learn, work, worship and connect with others. Every person’s story is shaped by a unique combination of strengths, opportunities and challenges. Understanding those broader influences allows us to respond in ways that are both meaningful and sustainable.

This perspective lies at the heart of the social work profession that underpins our organisation. Social workers are uniquely trained to understand the connection between individual experiences and the wider social realities that influence wellbeing, helping to strengthen both personal resilience and community wellbeing.

To see the person is to better understand the community; to understand the community is to better support the person.

Our Commitment

Championing Social Justice

We are deeply committed to advancing social justice by pro-actively addressing mental health challenges head-on. Our mission is to create equitable opportunities for mental well-being, ensuring that every voice is heard and supported. Through our initiatives, we strive to dismantle barriers and contribute to a society where mental health is prioritised and accessible to all.

Building Capability Through Training

Training Unemployed Social Workers

Khuluma dedicates itself to provide unemployed social workers with the skills necessary to tackle mental health issues effectively. Our comprehensive training programs are designed to equip these individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to make a significant impact in their communities. By focusing on practical, non-clinical interventions, we enable social workers to become catalysts for change in mental health care.

Our training emphasizes real-world applications, ensuring that social workers are prepared to address diverse mental health challenges.

We provide ongoing support and resources, fostering a network of professionals committed to improving mental health outcomes. This approach not only benefits the individuals trained but also strengthens the communities they serve.

Community Engagement

Community engagement is at the heart of Khuluma’s approach to mental health. We believe that involving the community is essential for creating sustainable mental health solutions. Community engagement not only enhances the effectiveness of our programs but also strengthens the social fabric, making mental health care more accessible and inclusive.

Breaking "the Stigma"

Our programs are adopted from well researched and proven international practises that break the stigma surrounding mental health issues. We encourage open dialogue and active participation, allowing community members to share their experiences and support each other. We create a culture of understanding and empathy.
