Khuluma MHFA* NPC is building a network of social workers who are dedicated to contribute to strengthen a positive mental health culture among the South African youth.
Since 2022, the focus of our core team has been dedicated to developing programmes that will assist individuals and communities (Workplace, Schools) to build or improve their mental health resilience. Based on best international practices, our programmes have been adapted to South Africa’s sociocultural understanding of mental health, so as to overcome ‘stigmas’. Our priority is the equipping of the youth, especially Grade 10 learners. with the ‘tools’ needed for effective mental well-being management. Grade 10 is a challenging school year where the transition starts from being a learner to ultimately a contributor to our economy of 2035 and beyond.
Our mental health training and support programmes are pro-active and non-clinical. They are provided by registered health professionals.
We have pilot tested “how to Khuluma” and are preparing to scale it within the Durban area and beyond (NB: On paper, there are 40,000 Grade 10 learners in the greater Durban/eThekwini school districts!). Although our programs are well structured and not clinical, they are delivered under the appropriate protocols of confidentiality and ensure that referral procedures are in place in the event of emergencies.
Khuluma will train (unemployed) social workers and provide them with the resources need to operate in the area where they live. Khuluma is a not-for-profit business and is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity employment.
