Hidden struggles: What 290 Durban Learners Revealed About Mental Health in Schools

09.06.2026 | News, Programmes, Workshops

Durban, South Africa (9 June 2026) – Khuluma MHFA[1] NPC has successfully concluded a series of mental health workshops with Grade 10 learners at a High School in one of Durban’s townships, reaching approximately 290 learners across seven sessions during the second school term of 2026.The attendance was voluntary. Out of the 354 registered Grade 10 learners over 80% attended.

The school is an English-medium school serving learners primarily from surrounding isiZulu speaking communities. Recognising the importance of culturally relevant mental health support, the programme was facilitated by registered social workers who understand the socio-cultural aspects of mental health within local communities. Sessions were facilitated in a mix of isiZulu and English to ensure understanding, accessibility and meaningful engagement.

The programme aimed to raise awareness about mental health, promote emotional wellbeing, and create safe spaces for learners to engage in open and meaningful conversations about their experiences, key topics such as peer pressure, bullying, self-esteem, stress, relationships, and healthy coping strategies.

Learners responded positively to the interactive and learner-centred approach, participating through discussions, workbook activities, and anonymous reflections. While some learners were initially hesitant to share openly, written exercises revealed strong engagement and deeper personal insights.

The sessions highlighted how important safe, non-judgemental spaces are for young people. Many learners expressed a desire for continued support and opportunities to speak openly about their challenges,

said the Khuluma facilitation team.

Across the programme, several key themes emerged, including:

  • Challenges with emotional expression and communication
  • Peer pressure and bullying
  • Academic stress and concerns about future
  • Family-related difficulties and limited support system
  • Growing interest in mental health awareness and self-development.

Encouragingly, learners demonstrated increased awareness of mental health concepts and a willingness to engage in conversations that are often considered difficult or taboo. highlighting the programme’s role in early identification and intervention.

The workshops also reinforced the importance of smaller group discussions and continued engagement, as these were shown to improve participation and trust among learners. Khuluma plans to return in the next school term to build on the momentum and deepen its support.

In this instance, the workshop sessions took place at the end of a school day. The school’s leadership facilitated the obtaining of the parental/guardian consent and made available the classrooms. We appreciate their assistance and the learners for their collaboration and commitment. They made it so easy for us and we look forward to continuing our support of their prioritising mental health and wellbeing of their learners!
